Bay Area Capital Connections 14
Connecting in a New World: Rewriting Boundaries
This year’s Bay Area Capital Connections conference theme is Connecting in a New World: Rewriting Boundaries. As we begin to understand a world that is forever changed by a sustained pandemic and social upheaval, this year we are inviting all of our conference attendees to join us in doing some self-reflection, visioning and future planning. We have all been challenged in recent years, often in ways that we were not prepared for. How do we learn from those experiences? How can we identify and challenge the norms expected of entrepreneurs when interacting with financial, governmental, and nonprofit institutions?
What’s New
Since 2020, we have worked diligently to keep our conferences accessible by holding the gatherings virtually. In the interest of maintaining this focus on accessibility, we will be holding our Bay Area Capital Connections conference virtually for the third consecutive year. We are excited to invite all conference attendees (who are comfortable in doing so) to join us for an in-person reception at Bar Shiru in Oakland to close out our conference day.
*Alliance for Community Development is deeply committed to the safety of our community. We will adhere to all Covid protocols recommended by the City of Oakland, Alameda County, Oakstop, and Bar Shiru for our co-working day and closing reception.
Bar Shiru requires proof of vaccination for entry.

Holistic Healing for Community Transformation
In the spirit of our conference’s title, Connecting in a New World: Rewriting Boundaries, speaker Patrick Brown will delve into the tensions, opportunities, and (un)learning required to establish boundaries for oneself personally and as business owners. How can we use the present moment to rethink how we engage in community with each other?

So, What Now? Voices from Community (Panel)
For over two years, entrepreneurs and small business owners have worked through a constantly shifting landscape in order to do business. In navigating this kaleidoscope of change, we must recognize how much of our ability to thrive (or even simply show up) is uniquely grounded in those around us. Many entrepreneurs have found new opportunities to support their communities during a sustained pandemic.
As we enter the undefined era of “post-pandemic” life, many of the business resources offered in 2020 and 2021 have either ceased in activity or reverted back to their pre-pandemic offerings. So, what now?
Join us for an intimate panel discussion featuring speakers Miles Dotson and Sarah Kirnon of Sanctuary for Sustainable Artistry, Latorra Monk of Oaklandia Cafe & Bakery, Jessie Nguyen of REAL People's Fund, and with Sasha Werblin of LISC Bay Area as our featured moderator! Speakers will discuss how they pivoted during the pandemic and what needs are still present in the ecosystem.

Access to Capital
Access to Capital is an excellent opportunity for early stage and existing businesses to explore sources of funding. Entrepreneurs and small business owners will participate in three 30-minute rounds with representatives of institutions that provide direct funding (lending, grants, equity investment, etc.) to Bay Area small businesses.
Our goal is to create direct and viable community connections for entrepreneurs and small business owners that will help them navigate the Bay Area capital landscape and start the process of securing the funding needed to run a thriving business

Moving from Crabs in a Barrel to Cranes in the Sky
For decades economic justice leaders have called for “building our own tables,” advocating for oppressed communities to deepen our capacity for self-sufficiency. However, pushes for community self-sufficiency can be often conflated by the Western obsession with individual self-sufficiency.
As we bring our conference to a close, we will hold space for a nuanced closing reflection on rejecting the pervasive ‘winner takes all’ ideology to instead build through collaboration, wellbeing, and collective gain.
How can we shift away from an individualistic perspective and towards an interdependent one?
Join us as we reflect, standing in full curiosity of all we can be and do together
